A detailed background check may include a review of your employment history, criminal history, driving history, personal references, and even your credit report. The information gleaned from a thorough background check can assist an employer in making appropriate hiring decisions. However, the employer must obtain signed consent from a prospective employee if they utilize a third party to perform background checks.

If you’re uncomfortable with a potential employer performing a background check, you have the option of requesting that one not be performed and your job application be withdrawn.
