What is a White Collar Job?

Answer:
The term “white collar job” came
from the white shirts traditionally worn by office workers, managers, salespeople, and others who were not involved in manual labor and did not have to worry about getting dirty in the course of a normal work day.

Today, white collar jobs are generally thought to be clerical office jobs, but can also include fields such as sales, customer service, restaurant management, and others.  Although many of the people who hold white collar jobs do still wear a white button-down shirt, often as part of a suit, some office environments are changing and allow for business casual attire.  White collar jobs are usually thought of as being full time and salaried positions, but there are many part-time white collar jobs, as well as white collar jobs which pay an hourly wage.
