What is a Stenographer?

Answer:
A stenographer is someone who is trained in stenography,
a type of shorthand that is used in court reporting and other legal and business procedures.  The most common position for a stenographer is that of a court reporter, but stenography can also be used in government or business settings, when an accurate record needs to be kept.

It is essential that stenographers are meticulous and accurate, and some stenographers will even make an audio recording of the procedures so that they can go back and check the transcript.  Since even the slightest mistake can make a huge difference in the outcome of a court case, for example, stenographers must check for accuracy.

Most stenographers use a stenotype machine, which is a specialized keyboard that uses syllable notation instead of individual letters, making it faster for stenographers to use.  Most stenographers can record between 225-300 words per minute using a stenotype machine.
