What is a Cover Letter?

A cover letter is a letter that goes along

with a resume, an application, or some material that is being submitted. Cover letters provide a little bit of background on the person submitting the resume or application, and introduces her to the person who will be reading the documents.

A good cover letter also explains why the applicant is interested in this particular position.

Cover letters are usually only one page in length, since the person reading them will probably have a large stack and doesn't have much time to spend on any particular letter. Obviously, spelling, grammar, and punctuation are very important, since obvious mistakes can give the reader a bad impression of the candidate.

An example or sample of a Cover Letter:

Attn: To whom it may concern,

I am writing you with respect to the Computer Programming opportunity that was published within our campus job board.

I currently have more than five years of Computer Programming experience with a degree in Information Technology from XYZ University.

I have worked on dozens of enterprise level projects similar to your networking products and I know I will be a valuable asset to your IT Team.

I would like to schedule an Interview so that I can find out more about your Organization. I look forward to finding out more about this opportunity and I appreciate your time.
