What Does an Orthodontist Do?

Answer:
An orthodontist is someone who prevents or treats orthodontic problems,
such as crooked teeth or misaligned jaws. Orthodontists treat problems that are cosmetic, as well as health-related.

Many people have malocclusions, or misaligned teeth, such as overbites, underbites, crossbites, and openbites. Others have dental problems that affect their ability to speak clearly or to chew, or are born with a cleft lip or cleft palate.

Orthodontists usually start by taking x-rays and diagnosing the problems. After the issues are diagnosed, they can be treated, often with retainers or braces, and in some cases with surgery or wiring the jaw shut. Although most people think of orthodontists as dealing almost exclusively with children who need braces, they can treat adults as well, and treat or prevent many different tooth and jaw problems.
