What does an Anesthesiologist do?

Answer:
Wondering about the job duties of an anesthesiologist?
Are you scheduled for surgery and want to know how an anesthesiologist will help you? Perhaps you’re interested in a career in anesthesiology. An anesthesiologist is a medical doctor who focuses on providing pain relief for patients requiring surgical procedures, as well as patients with chronic pain conditions.

An anesthesiologist’s responsibilities include consulting with other physicians or surgeons about treatments that are appropriate for a surgical patient prior, during, and after a surgical procedure. One of the main responsibilities for the anesthesiologist is to provide the appropriate type of anesthesia, (i.e., general anesthesia, local anesthesia, sedation), to a patient during surgery. They must also monitor a surgical patient’s vital life signs, such as a patient’s heart rate, blood pressure, breathing pattern and body temperature. In order to perform this task, an anesthesiologist must constantly monitor and assess these vital signs during a surgical procedure. Anesthesiologists may also work in areas such as labor and delivery and intensive care units to provide pain management to patients in those areas.

The training to become an anesthesiologist requires extensive schooling. In fact, the education and training requirements are one of the most rigorous of all occupations. After completing medical school, they must then complete an internship program and finally enter and complete a residency lasting two to six years. Board certified anesthesiologists have passed the ABPS (American Board of Physician Specialties) certification exams.
