What Does an Administrative Assistant Do?

Answer:
An administrative assistant performs a large
number of clerical and administrative tasks in order for a business or organization to run effectively and efficiently.

The term has largely replaced the title of “secretary,” as it is considered more respectful, but the role has also shifted somewhat from that of a traditional office secretary. Although secretaries have historically tended to be female, an administrative assistant, or “admin,” can be male or female.

Administrative assistants tend to organize files, both paper and electronic, schedule appointments, and stay on top of postal mail, faxes, and e-mail. Some administrative assistants answer telephones and deal with the public before their boss will see anyone. Others do research and plan meetings. Depending on the person the administrative assistant is working for, he or she may have different tasks, but almost all of the tasks revolve around keeping the boss organized and the office running well.
