What Does a Social Worker Do?

Answer:
The field of social work is large and extremely
diverse, so a social worker may have many different roles. Some social workers function as therapists, performing individual, couples, family, or group counseling. Many others work for some branch of state social services, such as Child Protective Services. Social workers who are employed by the state may help and advise people on welfare, those trying to stop drug or alcohol abuse, people transitioning from homelessness, or trying to find employment.

Social workers may also work in an environment such as a school or a hospital. In a school setting, a social worker is able to counsel children, facilitate groups for children who have similar behavioral or emotional issues, assist in individual educational plans (IEPs), help teachers in dealing with difficult children, work with parents on parenting skills, and observe children who are suspected of being abused. In a hospital, a social worker may provide brief counseling, deal with patients who are psychologically distressed in addition to their other complaints, assist patients with what care will be needed, and help homeless patients find housing.

Social workers usually hold a master's degree, and some also go through the licensing process to become a licensed clinical social worker, or LCSW. Social work is an extremely demanding job, and doesn't often pay well. However, social workers are essential to many communities!
