What Does a Respiratory Therapist Do?

Answer:
A respiratory therapist is a health care worker
who specializes in helping patients breathe more comfortably. A respiratory therapist can help a patient improve his or her breathing by using medical equipment, medication, or patient training and education.

Many respiratory therapists work in hospitals and clinics, but some also provide in-home care for patients who need medication or equipment such as ventilators or oxygen machines at home to help their breathing. Sleep disorders are another common field for respiratory therapists to specialize in.

Respiratory therapists are usually, depending on the jurisdiction, required to have at least a two-year or four-year degree, and to become a certified respiratory therapist, or CRT, by taking an examination. After becoming a CRT, a respiratory therapist can become a registered respiratory therapist, or RRT, by taking further examinations.
