What Does a Podiatrist Do?

Answer:
A podiatrist is a doctor that specializes in diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases and injuries of the foot, ankle, and lower leg.
Some people don't think of podiatrists as “real” doctors, but they are medical doctors, having been to medical school and become board certified. Podiatrists receive a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree, and are also trained in surgery, emergency care, radiology, and other areas.

Some common issues that are treated by podiatrists are problems of the feet including bunions, corns, ingrown toenails, plantar warts, and fungus of the toenail. Podiatrists prescribe orthotics when needed, treat plantar faciitis, flat feet, hammertoes, and club feet. Circulation problems in the feet due to diabetes can also be treated by a podiatrist. Podiatrists can be found in private practice, clinics, and hospitals.
