What Does a Periodontist Do?

Answer:
A periodontist is a dentist who has decided
to specialize in diseases of the gums. Periodontists must complete an additional two to three years of training after dental school is completed, learning about gum disease, its treatment, and its prevention.

Periodontal disease is the primary cause of tooth loss, and is characterized by receding gums, red or swollen gums, and loose teeth. Dentists in general practice often catch the beginning of periodontal disease and refer the patient to a periodontist for treatment.

Periodontists can perform dental scaling (removing plaque from the roots of teeth) and root planing (smoothing the roots of teeth) to prevent further bacteria growth. In cases of more advanced periodontal disease, a periodontist can perform bone grafts to replace lost bone mass, tooth and gum contouring, and crown lengthening. Periodontists can also perform dental implants.
