A mental health counselor assists people in finding positive and appropriate coping strategies and treatment plans for their problems. A mental health counselor must be proficient in implementing appropriate counseling strategies for a variety of problems. They must be able to understand multiple counseling theories and processes. Some counselors choose to work in a specific area such as a psychiatric hospitals or a substance abuse treatment center. Mental health counselors must be able to work with other trained professionals such as psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and school counselors to plan the most effective treatment for a patient.
