What Does a Judge Do?

Answer:
Judges apply and uphold the law. Judges hold
hearings to decide if a trial is needed for a particular case. They can also hold defendants in jail while waiting for a trial, or place other restrictions on him or her.

A judge also presides over hearings and trials, as clients are represented by their attorneys. Judges make sure that attorneys follow procedure, and decide if evidence is admissible, and how testimony should be conducted. If anything unexpected comes up during the trial, the judge decides how to proceed.

For many trials, a jury, not a judge, decides if the accused party is innocent or guilty. However, a judge still presides over the trial, instructing the jury on laws, responsibilities, and procedure. Judges may decide on sentences for defendants found guilty and compensation for damages in civil cases.
