What does a Dietitian do?

Answer:
If you’re interested in food and nutrition, you
might consider becoming a dietitian. Dietitians are specialists in the types of food and amounts of food required for a person’s health.

Dietitians have the opportunity to work in a variety of settings. They are employed by hospitals, nursing homes, social service agencies, health clubs, school systems, as well as by individual clients. They may direct a food service system for an institution, or they may evaluate an individual's diet and suggest healthier alternatives.

Dietitians must have a thorough knowledge of the nutritional requirements for various stages of growth and development. Therefore, it is important that they have a background in such subjects as biology, microbiology, biochemistry and physiology.

A Registered Dietitian is required to obtain a degree in nutrition or dietetics, complete an internship at a facility approved by the American Dietetic Association, and pass a national examination.
