What Does a Counselor Do?

Answer:
There are many different kinds of counselors.
Most people associate the word “counselor” with a therapist, who could be a psychologist, psychiatrist, a marriage and family therapist (MFT), or a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW).

These counselors conduct regular therapy sessions with their clients, usually employing various types of cognitive or talk therapy either individually or in a group. School counselors may perform some of these duties, depending up on the school, as well as helping students with academic issues.

Other types of counselors include camp counselors, lawyers giving counsel to clients, ministers and pastors giving advice or conducting therapy sessions, and college academic counselors. The one thing that all types of counselors have in common is that they provide some sort of counsel – whether it be legal counsel, academic advice, or mental health therapy. Even a close friend or mentor may sometimes be referred to as a “trusted counselor.”
