What are the Job Duties of an ESL Teacher?

Answer:
ESL stands for English as a Second Language,
and ESL teachers have special training in teaching children or adults who do not speak English as a native language.  These students are often referred to as English Language Learners, or ELLs.  ESL teachers are responsible for working with ELLs in order to help them gain fluency in spoken and written English.  ESL teachers do not teach in another language, but teach in English to help students to read, write, speak and understand English.

ESL teachers at the K-12 level are credentialed teachers who usually have specialized ESL training.  They may teach other subjects as well as English, using many of the same techniques as they do when teaching English.  These techniques involve visual aids, modeling responses, and using context clues to determine meaning.

At the adult or college level, ESL teachers often have a master's degree, and may teach at a community college or teach special night classes for recent immigrants.  It is common for elementary or secondary schools with a high population of ELL students to offer ESL classes for the students' parents on campus.
