What are the Job Duties of a Civil Engineer?

A civil engineer is someone who has been trained
in civil engineering.  These engineers are responsible for designing, constructing, maintaining structures and civil engineers might be hired by private firms, or by local governments or municipalities.  Civil engineers may focus on water treatment, transportation, airports, train stations, or government buildings.


The job duties of a civil engineer include designing structures that are safe and up to code.  Civil engineers try to keep efficiency, economic considerations, and maintenance in mind, and sometimes work with architects or other professional to accomplish these goals. 

Civil engineers who focus on water treatment may be responsible for the design, development, and upkeep of dams, sewage plants, and fresh water delivery systems.  Projects for civil engineers in the transportation sector could include tunnels, bridges, and freeway intersections.  Other projects that a civil engineer may work on are power plants, office buildings, or government buildings.
