Stenographers, such as court reporters,
are often in very high demand in corporate, legal, and government settings.  The minimum level of education required to become a stenographer is generally a high school diploma or its equivalent.  It is important to be familiar with typing and basic office work and etiquette if you wish to become a stenographer. 

Although most stenographers use a stenotype machine, which is different than a QWERTY keyboard, the same basic skills are needed.  Stenography programs can be found at community colleges and vocational schools, and take between one and four years to complete.  If your state has a stenography test that must be passed, the program should prepare you for the examination.  The programs also provide certificates for stenographers.

When you are a certified stenographer, there are many venues in which to find a job.  Courts hire stenographers to be court reporters, and there are there are often jobs available in the corporate world and in government.  In fact, many stenographers work as freelancers, giving them the flexibility to take a variety of jobs.
