What is a Freelance Job?

A freelance job is one in which a person who
works for himself or herself, contracting out services.  Freelance photographers and freelance writers are often the first types of freelancing jobs that jump to mind, but people can work as freelancers in many different industries and fields.


Instead of being employed by a specific company, freelancers contract out their work.  This means that a company can hire a freelancer only when they need one, and not have to keep them on their payroll all year long.

People choose to be freelancers for a variety of reasons.  Working as a freelancer allows people to have a very flexible schedule, to set their own rate, and to only take which projects they are interested in.  Freelancers have to be assertive in finding work though, since it is sometimes difficult to find steady freelance work.
