What is a Scholarship?

Answer:
A scholarship is a form of financial assistance
for furthering one's education, which is awarded to individuals, based on a variety of criteria including need, merit, sociology, general, and institutional, to list some examples.

Scholarships are typically awarded by entities actively engaged in funding the promotion and growth of particular philosophical or social values and objectives.

For example, The Gates Scholarship, part of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and funded by a $210 million endowment, is designed to help outstanding (non-UK) students attend the University of Cambridge, in the United Kingdom.

In addition, the AAA Travel High School Challenge, run by the American Automobile Association, is open to high-school students in grades nine through twelve.  This travel-themed scholarship is won through a competition held yearly in Orlando, Florida.

There are literally hundreds of scholarships available from a variety of sources and for a variety of purposes.
