There are five universities which offer Physicians In order to become a PA, you typically need two years of specialized schooling. Most people who pursue this career already have a Bachelor’s Degree. The typical PA program has some prerequisites, including at least two years of college, classes in biology and chemistry, and sometimes previous experience. The program itself will include biochemistry, pathology, human anatomy, physiology, microbiology, clinical pharmacology, clinical medicine, geriatric and home healthcare, disease prevention, and medical ethics. Students also must take on clinical training with a supervisor, usually in these areas: primary care medicine, inpatient medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, geriatrics, emergency medicine, psychiatry, and pediatrics. In North Carolina, there are a number of hospitals and clinics which work with the schools, including the University of North Carolina Hospitals (located around the state), Duke University Medical Center in Durham, and Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
