What personal skills or qualities are needed to become an Optometrist? |
|
Answer:
An Optometrist is a Doctor who specializes in eye-care, Optometrists do not typically need as much education as Opthalmologists, since Optometrists do not perform surgeries, nor do they get as deeply involved in organically related vision issues; although Optometrists often refer patients to other professionals if they discover such a need during patient eye examinations and tests. Some Optometrists might work alongside Opthalmologists, preparing patients for surgery, and other similar duties. Many Optometrists might work for companies which create prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses for sale to the general public, in malls and stand-alone eye-care clinics/stores. Optometrists are licensed to perform eye-examinations and tests, as well as administer some medications. Optometrists typically complete four years of college, then four more years of specialized study relating to eye-care, vision, and the overall visual systems. Such topics as Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Neurology, and other similar subjects would be part of the Optometrist's studies. Optometrists must be detail-oriented, well-organized, personable, and approachable, since much of their work is viewing and evaluating very fine details, and working in close proximity to patients and clients.
