What personal skills or qualities are needed to become a Court Reporter?

Answer:
A Court Reporter is one who is engaged in keeping
a record of various court proceedings, whether for civil court, criminal court, military court, or other kind of established court.

A Court Reporter needs to understand the laws or other regulations and guidelines associated with the particular type of court they are attached to.  For example, a civil Court Reporter needs to understand Civil Law.  A military Court Reporter needs to be familiar with Military Law.

Court Reporters must also have solid language skills, including grammar, spelling, punctuation, and the like.  Court Reporters often are required to read back their records, thus they need to be comfortable speaking in front of groups.

Some states require that Court Reporters pass licensing or certificate examinations, while other states do not.  For example, Arizona requires Court Reporters to pass an Arizona Written Knowledge Test with 75% accuracy on questions relating to Arizona State Codes and Rules.  On the other hand, Kentucky does not require any special licensing or certification to become a Court Reporter.

Court Reporters must also learn how to effectively use stenotype equipment, which is specially designed for Court Reporter use.  These machines somewhat resemble small typewriters, but are set up with a shorthand input system rather than letter by letter input.  Court Reporters are typically required to be able to input over 225 words per minute.  Some Court Reporters take many years to master such levels of skill.

Court Reporters should also be friendly and personable, since they come in contact with a wide variety of people in their everyday duties.
