What is CPM?

CPM also known as Certified
Professional Midwife
is defined as an independent Midwifery practitioner having knowledge and skills and who has met all the standards for certification (i.e. passed written examination and skill assessment test) designed by North American Registry of Midwives (NARM).


The NARM works in collaboration with Midwives Alliance of North America (MANA), Midwifery Education Accreditation Council (MEAC), Citizens for Midwifery (CfM) and different stakeholders from US.

The various requirements needed to apply for the CPM credential are that candidate must be graduated of programs which are accredited by Midwifery Education Accreditation Council (MEAC), Midwives certified by ACNM Certification Council (ACC) as CNMs and CMs and those who has completed NARM’s Portfolio Evaluation Process (PEP) Program and at least 1 year of clinical experience in Out-of-Hospital settings under the supervision of a preceptor and this must be verified by the preceptor. The Certificate of CPM is to be re-certified in every 3 years of time.

CPMs are meant for providing the professional care to women and their babies. CPMs provide wide range of support regarding the pregnancy, birth and postpartum period. CPM is always in close touch with other maternity care professional to seek any consultation or collaboration when needed. CPMs are supposed to follow NACPM Standards for practice and Midwives’ Model of Care.

The advantages of utilizing the services of CPM are that no exposure to anesthetic is required that will otherwise interfere with neonatal neurological development, no risk of hospital infection, elimination of hospital expenses for a normal life event, less disruption of mother and family members as well as helps in providing better health education & personal attention and many more.

The demand for home and birth center birth and thus for CPM is increasing day-by-day as more and more women and families are interested in less technological intervention, cheaper and family oriented birth setting.
