Counselling is defined as a process The person who is giving the counselling session is known as Counsellor. In counselling people not related to each other meet and the Counsellor gives advices or suggestions to the person who is having the problem to reach a particular solution.
Counselling is divided into different types depending on the category of the problem like marriage counselling, financial counselling, social counselling, psychological counselling, legal counselling, relationship counselling, educational counselling or academic counselling, career counselling, behavioral counselling and many more.
One must also remember that going for a counselling session does not means that a person is helpless or incapable of solving the problem by his/her own efforts. But a counselling session will only help a person to solve the problem in a better way.
Although the Counselling process will depend on the type of problem for which counselling is needed but the general steps that are followed in the counselling process are given below: -
(a) Firstly background information of the client is collected. (b) The main problem is identified. (c) A separate case is formulated for the problem. (d) Counsellor gives the appointment to the client. (e) Counselling of the client by the counsellor starts for a particular length of time. (f) Reaching to a particular solution to the problem. (g) End of the Counselling session.
In Counselling session length of counselling session is also important as change is not accepted by everyone easily so they need some time for it and this time in turn depends on the severity of the problem, client nature, client age and many more.
For an effective Counselling session it is also very essential that counsellor must also keep on adding new skills in his/her counselling style by the way of training.
